She-Tea Kids
3rd September 2010

Recently I have been in several social situations with mums where their kids have sat up at the table and ordered a cup of tea. My two year old is also quite partial to a sip of white (no sugar) tea when she sees her mum taking a daily tea break.

She-Tea, an Australian company based in Daylesford Victoria, has just launched their Junior Fruit Infusions, designed especially for children. These are a heathly alternative to cordial and juice and can be served warm in winter and chilled in summer.
The He-Tea and the She-Tea Junior blends are an all-natural, berry infusion for little boys and girls. They have no artificial colours or flavours, no preservatives and no added sugar. They can also be frozen in beautiful iceypoles for that hot summer day.

I like the idea that the kids can share in my daily tea ritual with something that is high in Vitamin C and antioxidents and is great for general health and immunity. Smiles all round.
Ingredients include; blackcurrent, strawberry, blackberry, bilberry, elderberry, hibiscus blossums and rosehip. It is recommended that the Junior Blends would be best served only with a hint of flavour for your little ones taste palette.

The Junior Fruit Infusions are available to purchase from the She-Tea website for RRP$21.95 plus $2.00 Postage or to see the full list of stockists CLICK HERE.

23rd August 2010

It is very clear to see the environment is becoming an important factor in many parents lives today. We are more cautious of what our children are exposed to and with stores like www.ittybittygreenie.com.au put our minds at ease knowing that the products on offer are sourced with the environment in mind.

Itty Bitty Greenie, Australia's newest resource for eco-friendly, organic and toxin-free children's products, has launched its retail website, featuring a gorgeous range of products-many of them available to Australian consumers for the first time.

Former journalist and designer Donna Macmullin, started Itty Bitty Greenie as a blog to share her research on the the latest feeding products, organic skin care, clothing and toys that are free from chemicals, made from renewable resources and manufactured under ethical working conditions. The overwhelming response to her blog resulted in Donna searching for eco-friendly brands that were not available to Australian parents. She has made sure that there are some crucial points of difference in the products that are offered at Itty Bitty Greenie. Products at Itty Bitty Greenie;

  • are either made from recycled materials, are recyclable and/or use recycled packaging
  • not not contain hormone-disrupting chemicals such as BPA and phthalates
  • are made by companies committed to erath-friendly and fair trade practices
  • have a high design value
  • have been independently tested to ensure the highest standards of quality and safety

A few of the unique and eco-friendly products that are my favourites include;

           Grass Drying Rack-RRP $39.95                                  Eco-Stars Crayons- RRP $19.95

To celebrate the launch of it's eco-shop, Itty Bitty Greenie is offering FREE delivery on all orders throughout Australia for the month of August. For more information or to purchase one of the wonderful products from Itty Bitty Greenie CLICK HERE.

ALEX&ANT
16th August 2010

You may have noticed that suddenly there are many spring/summer items that have snuck their way into the department stores. How did this happen when we still are wearing jumpers in the day and have the heating on at night?
Last week many retailers got to have a sneak peak of what many of the fashion brands and kids products have in store for Spring and Summer 2010/2011 at Kids In Style trade fair in Melbourne.

One brand we are eagerly waiting the launch of their Spring/Summer 2010/2011 collection is ALEX&ANT. ALEX&ANT is a Cottesloe based business run by a  mother of two, Anthony and Alexandra, hence the name ALEX&ANT.
ALEX&ANT focuses on stylish fashion for babies through to 14 years. Their collection prides itself on high quality, timeless designs that are well priced and effortless to wear and enjoy. They also have a beautiful and extensive collection of jewellery, shoes and accessories.

In September, they will be delivering their Spring/Summer 2010/2011 collection that is inspired by the Grande Dame of Fashion Coco Chanel. Jersey will play the lead role in the Summer 2010/2011 collection. The colour selection is from Chanels trademark muted colour palette-shades of navy blue, grey, black and white. Coco Chanel's designs were all about simplicity and functionality but with a sense of style and this is what ALEX&ANT wanted to replicate.

As well as a new range of kids 0-7 years fashion, ALEX&ANT have also decided to launch a 7-14 year old collection for girls at the same time. The ALEX&ANT 7-14 year old collection celebrates both innocence, sophistication, casual and special occasion dressing with the use of soft quality jersey.

KidsClick
10th August 2010

How many times have you downloaded your digital photos to find a few photos that;

  1. Don't look familiar to you AND
  2. The subject of the photo gives you some major clues as to who has been playing with your camera when you leave your camera lying around.

This is what I found the other day;

My son has a camera but it a kids one that doesn't take quality photos and it is really just to get him into the whole process of taking photos of people and things he finds interesting. Obviously he thinks mums camera is more fun...don't you agree?

'KidsClick' is a website that allows children to showcase their photography using particular themes that are voted for on a fortnightly basis using a poll on the website. Founded by NZ mum of three Simone, when her children's boredom resulted in Photo Scavenger Hunts. She decided that as her kids would sneak off with her camera and take photos on the sly, why not create a website that would give them permission and teach them how to do it well.

The rules are simple. Children must be under 15 years of age and get two weeks from when a new theme is posted to get your entry in. There are always two winners and they will become the judges for the next week's winners and so on. All you have to do is follow the theme (this week is SILLY) and then email your child's photo they have taken to KidsClick.

It's a great way to get your kids interested in photography and if they are super keen to learn more, there is a 'Tips for Young Phototakers' section where experienced photographers share their knowledge and experience in this field.

Sharnel Dollar Designs
7th August 2010

Do you need inspiration when planning your child's birthday party? Are you tired of coming up with the same party themes or licensed party products? Look no further.

Sharnel Dollar is a mum of two from Brisbane who turned her creative talents and love of party planning into an online business for all to enjoy. Sharnel is renowned for creating amazing and unforgettable parties for her children and their guests. The latest affair was a 'Enchanted Woodlands' party for her daughter Olivia who recently turned 6.

After being sent an amazing party invitation (pictured below) including woodlands scene in glass jar, the guests received on arrival their own woodlands fairy costume to wear at the party and take home. The costume had a leotard, tutu skirt, headpeice, wand and wings.

To make the party even more authentic, Sharnel hired deer and bunnies that frolicked in the extensive grounds of the Dollar household. The little fairies played games lead by Tilly the adult fairy and then sat down to an amazing woodland fairy buffet of food including; chocolate dipped strawberries that resembled wild mushroom growing, deer and bunny cookies, shortbread snails,  hedgehog cupcakes and woodland berry punch.

The dining table included toadstool seats, fairy dust, flower placemats and fairy butterfly balls which are all available to purchase or hire (lucky Queenslanders) when Sharnel's website launches in August. Sharnel can also supply mood boards which are available to purchase if you need a little inspiration.

Travel With Tots
4th August 2010

We haven't had too many family holidays as the idea of travelling with three children is quite daunting.
I have one friend that doesn't let three children stop her from travelling the world. They just follow in tow and are all seasoned travellers, all with passports, even the littlest who was not even 12 months old with his overseas trip.

We went  to England when my 6 and 1/2 year old (my eldest) was 11 months old. I have to say it wasn't the easiest of journeys and we only had one child back then. I now have a new found respect for parents who travel with tots on a regular basis.

For those who are thinking about travelling with small children but may have a lot of questions they need answering, including tips on travelling whilst pregnant, what child facilities are available at airports and what destination is family friendly, www.travelwithtots.com.au is the perfect destination for all information relating to travelling with small children.

Travel With Tots was founded by mum of one and ex-travel agent (with a background in journalism) Amy, who believes that you shouldn't stop travelling just because you have started parenthood. Amy hope to help families get out and see the world without the panic and stress of not knowing what to expect.

This website has a plethora of useful information for any travelling family including information on travel vaccines, links for family friendly dining in various locations around the world and it will also assist with choosing a destination on their 'Travel ideas and Inspirations' page. This website has got it covered and will certainly answer any questions you seek about travelling with kids.

Tupperware-Kids Kitchen
1st August 2010

Gone are the days when a Tupperware party would conjour up images of 1950's housewives sitting around drinking tea discussing storage containers. Tupperware a worldwide phenomenon has evolved over the years to become a brand that not only involves women but kids and schools too.

Last week my daughter(s) and I went to a 'Kids Kitchen' Tupperware party. The kids gets to cook a special recipe (we made cookies) in their own aprons and chefs hats and each child gets to take turns using the 'Kids Kitchen Utensils' made by Tupperware.
The party is very interactive and the kids get to be involved in something they may not do too often in their own home. Whilst the culinary delight is cooking, there is time to peruse the new range of products on offer from the Tupperware catalogue.

Not only are there are a number of different party options available, there are also fundraising options to raise money for your school including the 'Lunchbox Drive'.  Tupperware provides posters, flyers and order forms detailing a colourful range of Sandwich Keepers available for distribution with the school's newsletter. The' Lunchbox Drive' encourages parents to make healthy lunches for children at home and also limit the amount of rubbish that packages the lunches each day at school.

The school receives 10% of all sales with a further $10 donated for every party booked. For more information on Tupperware parties and fundraising options CLICK HERE.

MILK Baby
29th July 2010

I have to admit I am probably more winter than summer however I don't enjoy the cough and cold viruses that tend to accompany this cold month. I think I am the only one in my family to have escaped the lurgy, but the little tots haven't been so lucky. We run our three vaporiser units most nights in winter to assist with the children breathing with blocked noses and sometimes need to administor medicine, but if your little tot is too young for pharmaceutical products, the 'MILK baby' range may just be what you need.

'Snotty Grotty Room Spray' is 84% certified organic and is made from organic chamomile extract, organic rose hip oil, organic lavender oil, and organic ylang ylang oil.
If your baby has the sniffles and sneezes, grab your "Snotty Grotty Room Spray", stop praying and start spraying. 'Snotty Grotty Room Spray' helps to clear your baby's nasal passage, ensuring they can get a good night's sleep without nasty sniffles or sneezes.

'MILK baby' is owned and run by Lindy Klim who was decided to create her own range of baby products after her husband Michael developed a range of skincare products for men. As a mum of one and another on the way, she could not find a skincare range for babies that she was confident using on her own family. She decided to develop a range of baby skincare based purely on natural ingredients and 'MILK baby' was born.

Other products available include; Bath Time Wash, Nighty Night Room Spray and Sleepy Bubs Massage Oil. To view the full range of products offered by 'MILK baby' or to see where you can purchase the 'MILK baby' range CLICK HERE.

Ava's Tea Party
26th July 2010

You may have read some previous ABC Daily entries on 'Ava's Rule' last year.
Ava Rosemeyer was an angel who returned to heaven aged 3 years on February 5, 2007 after returning to her parked car searching for sweets and when overcome by heat, fell asleep.  Ava was not found until 30 minutes later unconscious but it was too late. Ava passed away two days later in hospital......

Everytime I read Sheye Rosemeyer's tribute page she set up for her daughter Ava, I end up in tears. What a strong and amazing woman Sheye Rosemeyer is. She is not only creating awareness through Ava's Rule for parents, but also keeping Ava's memory alive through various websites, charities and in 2009 envisaged a day where they could not only celebrate the life of their beautiful daughter but to also cherish the life they still had. The vision came about in the form of a tea party. A tea party that although was planned was never had with their daughter Ava whilst she was in their lives.
Sheye invited the blogging community to do the same, in whatever way they wished, simply with the idea to appreciate and an annual Ava's Tea Party was born. Each year around the 22nd August, people stop to appreciate what they have in the form of a tea party while keeping the memory of Ava alive.

This year, the girls from 'Details, Details" contacted Sheye about how they could contribute to making Ava's Tea Party even more "Beauty Full". They invited nine amazing designers to create their own tea party iinvitations with Ava in mind called "The Beauty Full" collection.

Nine limited edition, printable invitations have been created by nine leading children's stationery designers for Ava's Tea Party in memory of Ava Rosemeyer. 100% of sales will go to 'Paradise Kids- Supporting families experiencing illness and loss' and are available from Details Details until the 31st August 2010. To purchase one of the amazing "Beauty Full" printable invitation files for as little as $10, CLICK HERE or to read more about Ava's Tea Party CLICK HERE.

The Little Humbugs
Vintage Inspired Children's Art
22nd July 2010

Each day I come across something in my research that just makes you stop, look, bookmark and 'shout out' to all who will listen.
Etsy is one of those hidden treasures. www.etsy.com is one huge lucky dip filled with gorgeous prizes sold by many talented designers, artists and craft folk all over the world.

As mentioned previously, I love all children's products that are vintage, whimsical and show the innocence of childhood in their look and feel. I have never been one for modern art and believe that children's rooms should look like children's rooms depending on their age. My youngest daughter's bedroom still has two rolls of Cath Kidston wallpaper sitting on her cupboard waiting to be put up on a feature wall (we have nearly been in our new house 12 months), a pink birdcage wall decal and nothing else adorning the walls. I haven't yet come across a series of pictures that would suit her room and are affordable to buy more than one....until now!

The Little Humbugs-Vintage Inspired  Children's Art has all the qualities I love in children's prints. Simple, pretty and cute with a touch of style.
The Little Humbugs-Vintage Inspired  Children's Art is created by Melbourne mum Louise, who creates all her designs through inspiration from her own little humbugs as they enjoy their own childhood (especially when they are searching for magical fairies under the gum tree).

You will find most of the prints are drawn with pencil and ink and are then digitially coloured. The prints come in various sizes but most are 24cm x 19.5cm with a white border to allow for easy matting. They are currently priced around $US15 (approx. $AU16.90) on www.etsy.com which make them a very affordable gift for all who love good quality children's products.

To view the full collection of The Little Humbugs-Vintage Inspired  Children's Art or to purchase online CLICK HERE.

Sids and Kids Online Shop
20th July 2010

Many of you may have heard about the fabulous efforts of local mum Racheal Blaxell who raised over $15,000 in her SIDS and Kids Charity Auction- In Memory of Princess Lilli a few weeks ago.
Racheal and her family had unfortunately lost their daughter to SIDS aged 5 months in 2008 and with the second anniversary of 'Lilli's' birthday on the 15th June, Racheal with help from many generous businesses created an online auction on facebook to raise money for SIDS and Kids Hunter Region. Many businesses donated items to auction which allowed people to be involved in raising funds for this cause and in the process purchasing some fabulous items.
It always means more when you know that the money spent is going towards a good cause.

Many of you may not be aware that SIDS and Kids have an online shop where you can not only purchase from a gorgeous selection of baby and maternity wear and products but you will also be contributing to this cause with 30% of all sales going straight back to SIDS and Kids. This month, the SIDS and Kids website has Grobags at 20% off the RRP and 50% off postage.
Other brands available on this website include; Early Birds, Pickle Sheets, Grobags, Baby U, and OiOi Baby Bags.

SIDS and Kids is dedicated to saving the lives of babies during pregnancy, birth infancy and childhood. Their vision is delivered through world class research, evidence based education and bereavement support and advocacy. SIDS and Kids relies almost totally on the support of the community which makes the online shop even more important for this charity. To see the full range of products available in their online shop CLICK HERE.

NB: The SIDS and Kids Charity Auction-In Memory of Princess Lilli will continue on the 25th July to re-auction some items that were not sold or paid for and to continue raising funds for SIDS and Kids Hunter Region. For more information CLICK HERE.

Ten Minutes a Day
Baby Book Time
17th July 2010

We have always been advocates of reading to our children from a very young age so I strongly support the' Ten Minutes a Day' program promoted by Newcastle Libraries.
The 'Ten Minutes a Day' program runs on the belief that children who are read aloud to on a regular basis when they are young are readily able to learn to read once they start school.
When hearing someone read, children learn the structures of our language and grammar and the sounds of words. Children also learn to love books, appreciate them for their content and the stimulation they provide. Reading aloud to your child not only allows you to bond with your child but also teaches them valuable skills that will assist them in the early years of the schooling life.

'Baby Book Time' is a literacy program designed for parents and their babies two years and under. The program is designed to give parents an opportunity to share and experience the love of reading with their baby. The program gives parents practical ideas on using stories, rhymes, songs and music to help babies develop early literacy skills.

The program runs for four weeks with each session running for half an hour. At the end of the session there are light refreshments and this gives you an opportunity to meet other parents who are involved in the program. 'Baby Book Time' currently runs in City, Adamstown, New Lambton, Hamilton, Wallsend and Stockton Libraries and the next program is scheduled in most libraries for September 2010. Numbers are limited to nine babies per session so bookings are essential. To check the timetable of the next session CLICK HERE.

Baby Book Packs which include board books, CD and nursery rhymes are also available for loan from Wallsend, City and New Lambton libraries for a duration of four weeks.

Hunter Valley Gardens
Chocolate Festival
14th July 2010

I have a little (well okay... a lot) penchant for mint chocolate. A little each night with a cuppa is all it takes for a little chocolate satisfaction. This penchant however has also given me a couple of extra kilos that are not a welcome friend.
Although the extra kilos are unwanted, something is still drawing me to the third annual Chocolate Festival at Hunter Valley Gardens on the 7th-8th August.

This fun filled event is guaranteed to immerse visitors in a chocolate experience they will never forget. The two day extravaganza will feature all things chocolate including master classes, cooking demonstrations, competitions, chocolate talks and walks, chocolate exhibition stalls and fun for the whole family to enjoy.

Special guests and presenters include cooking sensations Fast Eddy, Dean Gibson, Adriano Zumbo (remember the Macaroon Tower on Masterchef) and Kirsten Tibballs who will all demonstrate a range of chocolate recipes.

If you can drag the kids away from the market stalls where you will be in chocolate heaven with fudge, chocolate dipped fruit, chocolate fountains, hand made chocolate and other chocolate products including soap, candles and cosmetics, head to Kidspace where there will be lots of fun activities for the little ones. Jumping castle, face painting, party games, roaming entertainment including clowns and a chocolate treasure hunt with prizes will sure to keep them occupied.
A mini chocolate factory will also be set up where the kids can mould their own hand  made chocolates for an additional fee of $10.

Entry to the gardens during the Chocolate Festival is $23.50 per adult (16 years and older), $15 for children between 4 and 15 years and children 3 years and under are free. For more information on the Chocolate Festival, CLICK HERE.

Farm Stays
13th July 2010

I have always had a dream that we could uproot and move to the country but with an English husband who has had the countryside vista I adore, all his life and wouldn't move away from the beach, I don't think that dream is ever going to happen.

It's nice to get put of town occasionally away from the rat race of "city" life and head to a place where you can experience life on a local farm. There is nothing better than seeing the look on the little one's faces as they help collect the eggs, milk the cows and feed the animals. Something that is a rare experience that they don't get to do in their daily lives.

There are a couple of "Farm Stay" farms close by if you would like to take a weekend to escape the "city" and take the kids to the farm to have this wonderful experience.

  • Kookaburra Cottage Farmstay is nestled in picturesque Bobs Farm located approximately half an hour from Newcastle and 15 minutes from Nelson Bay. A variety of animals can be found at the farm from chooks and cattle to donkeys and alpacas. Daily "jobs" time is around 4.30pm where you are invited to help milk the cow, collect the eggs and feed the numerous other animals including pigs, goats and turkeys. You also travel across the farm through paddock to pens on the "Tractor Ride". Accommodation includes the Farm house which has three bedrooms and sleep up to 10 people or guest rooms which are in the main residence on the farm. For more information on location, rates etc CLICK HERE.
  • Ashmar Farm Stay is located in Gloucester, approximately 90 minutes from Newcastle and 50 minutes to Forster. There is lots to do at Ashmar Farm for children who can play in the wide open spaces, and learn about the farm animals and where the food comes from. Everyday there are animals to feed, eggs to collect and cook for breakfast, cows to milk and if you are lucky you may even see a calf being born. There are also occasionally some small animals such as lambs and goats being reared and everyone can have a try at bottle feeding them. The children will also love the hay ride around the property.
The Cottage has 3 bedrooms and sleeps up to 12 people.  For more information on location, rates, etc CLICK HERE.

School Holidays-Wk 2
Sports activities
11th July 2010

What a wet start to the school holidays!
Cabin fever is starting to set in with the kids as they haven't been able to get outside and ride their scooters or use the trampoline. So far, any break in the weather, resulted in 5 minutes of sunshine and then showers again.

I have to say that I am a little disappointed to see that Mother Nature has a wicked sense of humour when it comes to parents and carers in the school holiday period.  Let's hope this week brings a few rays of sunshine, not only to allow the children a little vitamin D but there are also some great school holiday sport's activities this week that may take your interest. Here are just a few that may allow the kids to expel some energy and keep fit in the process;

  • The Hunter Sports Centre at Glendale has some great sessions this week including Tumbling and Tricks, General Gym, Mini Olympics, Trampolining, Cheerleading, Touch Football and Aerial Madness. Single sessions run for around 1.5 hours and start from around $14.50 per child.
  • There are still spots available in the 'Sporty Kids' School Holiday program. Sessions run at Edgeworth and run for around 1 hour in duration. 3-6 year olds can enjoy a combo class of soccer and ball games, whilst the 6-12 year olds can enjoy the Junior Active Soccer Program. Cost is $14 per child and bookings are essential. For more information go to www.sportykids.net.au.
  • The Forum Sports and Aquatic centre at Newcastle University are running their 'Splashzone' floating obstacle course in their 50 metre indoor heated pool. Sessions are scheduled for different age groups on different days and the cost is $7 per person.
  • Newcastle Tae Kwon Do are holding 'Come and Try Tae Kwon Do' sessions for people aged 4+ years and  the cost is $10.
  • The Forum Sports and Aquatic centre are also holding a 'Come and Try Climbing Wall' session on Wednesday for people aged 8+ years. Cost is $12.50 per person.
  • Lake Macquarie Tennis Centre in Cardiff are inviting you to 'Come and Try Tennis' on Friday in betweem 9am-2pm for all ages. This is a FREE activity but a gold coin is requested for cancer research.

For more information on the above sessions and many more sporting activities scheduled this week, CLICK HERE

Nanny Pickle
8th July 2010

There are not too many children's clothing brands that have a central character that encapsulates the true essence of the brand itself.
'Nanny Pickle' is one of those brands that evolved from a whimsical daydream and where the central character, "Bad Bunny" defines the design, style and meaning of the 'Nanny Pickle' collections.

It was a fortuitious day some three years ago that brought 'Nanny Pickle' and the two 'Au Pairs' together. The daydream began in the head of 'Au Pair' Shannon Horsfall, and with experience in design and a 'Bad Bunny' of her own, a wonderful garden of ideas flourished and after three years, the Nanny Pickle Collections were born.

With assistance and plenty of nurturing from Bad Bunny's other Au Pair Jennine Heymer, a beautiful collection of delightful infantwear, divine papier pieces for baby and mama, sweet hand made toys and delectable co-ordinated nursery accessories were created.

'Nanny Pickle's' adorable collections for little bunnies aged 0-18 months are like no other. Full of fantasy and fun, with just a hint of nostalgia, 'Nanny Pickle's' creations are certain to make any Bad Bunny and their Nannies smile with their cute and comical phrases creating a wonderful story for each collection.

'One never falls asleep in one's dinner plate', 'Don't run with scissors', 'Eat your crusts' and 'One never kisses on one's first playdate' are all "words of wisdom" I can hear a 'stern in approach' but 'soft in demeanor' Nanny sharing with her "Bad Bunny" and appear on the beautiful designs in the 'Nanny Pickle' collections.

The fabric used is soft to touch and is made from a selection of natural and organic yarns including; Bamboo, Organic Cotton and comfort elastane. The collection includes; singlet top and nappy cover sets, long sleeve and short sleeve jumpsuits, sleep bags and many more and come in a range of delicious colours including berries and cream, duck egg blue and icecream.

AromaPlay Clay
6th July 2010

Recently we were lucky enough to be associated with the 'Let's get Play-Doh donated to the Children's Oncology ward at the John John Hunter Hospital' Facebook Page run by Allison Blake. Our 'Mums Night Out' fundraiser raised much needed funds to assist in the purchase of toys for the ward and the individual and group Play-Doh Donations (in conjunction with Hasbro's donation) were enough to keep the Play Program 'in stock' for close to a year.
One think I didn't think about is that Play-Doh contains wheat and what happens if children with Coeliac disease would like to play with this "squishy stuff" as well.

Most pre-schools and daycares make their own 'playdough' but are coeliac children taken into account when whipping up a batch of wheat based 'playdough'?

With a gluten intolerant child, and after searching high and low for gluten free and natural playdough failing, one mum decided to create her own recipe that contained natural products, natural scents and even the packaging is environmentally friendly.
Lana mum of two girls, created a scented product that not only was natural but also served a purpose that would trigger memories and events. 'AromaPlay' was born to provide parents of children with gluten intolerant products the opportunity to avoid the products that make them ill.

'AromaPlay' produces seven different scented doughs that contain all natural scented essential oils including, Chamomile, Bergamont, Rosemary, Lemon and Lime, Lavender, Eucalyptus & Thyme and Sweet Orange. A maxi tub which is approximately 180g is $9.90 or you can try a 'Seven Scent Sampler' that contain seven mini tubs of  dough that include all the scents above.

Justine Clarke- Great Big World Tour 2010
1st July 2010

It's been a pretty good week this week!  Today we had our first birthday party with a great location, great entertainment and fabulous guests! Wednesday we had a small media piece in the local rag and on Monday we secured front row seats to the 'Great Big World Tour' which is coming to Newcastle in September.

I have been waiting for Justine's tour since her last national tour where she had to miss Newcastle due to her impending birth of baby Max. This year we made it in the national tour schedule which is so exciting for all Novocastrians and their children who love to sing and move along to her fantastic fun-filled tunes.

Justine's latest show  explores the music and colour of her new CD and DVD release Great Big World (ABC/Roadshow), journeying over land and under sea before arriving at the end of the rainbow.

The show also includes sing-a-long favourites from Justines's previous releases' I like to Sing' and 'Songs to Make You Smile', accompanied by a live band of fine musicians who bring great skill and plenty of entertainment for the little ones and big ones. And you only have to read the comments by fans on Facebook who have attended one of her concerts to see what a great time they had!

Justine Clarke is a versatile performer-an acclaimed film, television and stage actress as well as an accomplished jazz singer   and mother of three.

"Whether it's singing or acting on stage, performing live is where I get my kicks," says Justine. "Music-related live performance with little kids is incredibly satisfying because they are so willing to participate and have a good time. Everybody's there to join in, parents included."

Justine Clarke's Great Big World Tour will be coming to Newcastle City Hall on September 19. For more information or to purchase tickets CLICK HERE. And don't forget before you see her live, you can purchase her latest CD and DVD (released today) for Great Big World from the ABC Shop at Charlestown Square or online.

We can't wait!

Live for Kids
29th June 2010

I have to admit that I have been pretty naive when it comes to hospital funding until recently. Our movie night raised a couple of thousand dollars towards the play program in the Children's Oncology Unit at the John Hunter Hospital. A small contribution but it can help immensely towards assisting children in the recovery process by forgetting their illness through play.

There are so many areas in the John Hunter Hospital that are run by donations and this is where my naivety kicks in when some areas you think would be completely funded by the Government are funded by donations by groups and the community. One of those organisations is the Olivia Foundation. An organisation that is committed to raising funds to assist in the provision of world class health care in the Hunter Region, through the purchase of vital medical equipment and through the support of patients and their families.

The Olivia Foundation was founded by Simon and Gwendalyn Burt, in memory of their daughter Olivia who passed away in 2001 due to respiratory failure. They are committed to continuing Olivia's memory and the signifcant influences her life had on them. They are committed to ensuring that other parents do not suffer the painful experiences they have and where children are hospitalised they have the best equipment and care as possible.

'Live for Kids' is the fundraising arm of the Olivia Foundation where a number of events are planned to raise money for Children's Health in the Hunter Region. This years events include; A Cycle Challenge from Coffs Harbour to Newcastle, the Live for Kids running team competing in various events, the 'Live for Kids' Weight Loss Challenge, Olivia's Ride and The Red Carpet Benefit.

Tomorrow night 'Live for Kids' has organised a fun night at Broadmedow MacDonalds from 6pm-7pm. The 'Live for Kids' charity will receive 10% of all sales made between this time. Join some of the riding team for a meal while the kids play on the playground and assist in raising money towards the Children's Health in the Hunter Region.

Big Pond Movies
26th June 2010

Tonight the kids sat down to watch Shrek 2, but we had to stop it halfway as bed time was calling.
They are still a little bit young for Saturday night movies but when they are older we will probably have weekend movie nights where we can sit down as a family to watch family style movies.

Recently I was directed by a friend to the Big Pond Movies site. I didn't see the point of it at first until she explained the the process of selecting the movies and waiting for them not knowing which one will arrive that week is all part of the excitement and fun for her children.
The world of online transactions allow people to sit in the comfort of their own home and casually peruse the selection of goods on offer without the stress of busy crowds.

Big Pond Movies is a service that allows you to borrow DVD's without the hassle of having to return them by a set date, wiping all late fees and being able to watch them at your leisure. So how does it work?

The process of Big Pond Movie rental is;

  • Sign up to one of the movie plans where you can pick a plan that suits your family viewing. Prices start from $9.95 a month which allows you 2 DVD's a month. If you are a heavy viewer of DVD's, the ULTRA plan may suit allowing 12 rentals a month for $29.95.
  • After signing up you start selecting from 42,000 titles adding them to your 'MYQ' selection.
  • The DVD's are then delivered direct to your letterbox (usually takes two working days)
  • You then watch the movie whenever it suits and then return is at your leisure in the reply paid envelope.
  • Big Pond Movies will then send you the next movie. The fun thing about it is you don't know which movie from your 'MYQ' selection is being sent.

There are thousands of FAMILY movies to select from and might be an option if you find you are heading to the video store on a regular basis but don't want the hassle of kids arguing over what movie to select. For more information or to sign up to the FREE trial CLICK HERE

Smallp
24th June 2010

Now that the children are getting older, I really regret not getting more memory and keepsake items done to look back over when the children have grown up.

One thing that will never change is that time goes too quickly and they are only babies for a short time.  My littlest is nearly two and it only seems like yesterday that she was snuggling into me in hospital to settle. The problem is although these memories are at the forefront of my mind now, there will be a day that the little things that give you the 'aahhh' factor may become a distant memory if undocumented.

Smallprint (Smallp) is a business that can assist in turning a treasured memory into a long term keepsake. They can turn your child's fingerprint into a piece of silver that will last forever. A simple doodle or sketch can become a work of art etched into a silver keyring and tiny impressions of your little ones hands and feet can be put on silver pendants, cufflinks and keyrings.

Smallprint was orginally created in 2004 by Maija and Oliver Pykett and is now a franchised business all over the country. Lisa Haines is the current representative for Newcastle and the Hunter Valley and her work can be viewed at various markets in Hamilton, Maitland, Hunter Valley Gardens and also takes prints are Babies Galore Warners Bay on set dates. (Next session is Thursday 15th July).

There is also an opportunity to book a private session with a few friends over a coffee and the host will receive a 25% discount off the jewellery they order on the day. To see the full range of Smallp products or to contact Lisa for more information CLICK HERE.

Love Mae-Wall Decals
22nd June 2010

My walls are still looking a little bare in a number of rooms.
We have a long white hallway which will soon be covered in a gallery of family photographs when I get some time to print and frame the photos.
There are also two rolls of Cath Kidston wallpaper sitting in my daughters room to be put up on the walls when we get time. We have been in this house now for 9 months.

If you don't time to "dress your house" the way you would like, a fabulous alternative are the Walls Decals from Love Mae. Their wall decals are removable, made from fabric and are completely re-usable. There is a large range to choose from and each decal has a touch of vintage in each design. The wall decals come on a sheet with a full set of layout instructions and can be moved many times if you are not happy with your positioning.

There are designs that would suit most tastes and styles and also have the unique factor with designs like Forest Critters, Vintage Cars and the beautiful seasonal dolls that come with a selection of clothes you can interchange on the wall. The Tea Time decals with tea pots, tea cups, spilling tea, and tea drops are the perfect addition for your little girl's bedroom.

If you are looking for something a little smaller, try the Mini Mae decals which are perfect for small areas or to accessorise computers, notebooks, mirrors or just about anywhere that shows off your beautiful mini decals. You can purchase the Mini Mae decals from RRP$19.95.
This month four lucky subscribers will have the chance to win one of the Mini Mae decals for their own blank canvas.

A selection of Love Mae decals can be pruchased from the Silver Spoon at The Junction or to view the full range of stockists CLICK HERE.

Identity Direct
20th June 2010

A few years ago we bought a 'My Adventure' Christmas book from Identity Direct for my son to go in his Santa sack.
My Adventure Books are personalised books which incorporate your child's name, making them the star of an exciting adventure story. In each of the stories, your child's name, birthday, address and friend's names are also printed in these children's books.

My son was excited to feature in the book along with his friends names and as we bought the Santa book it was even more exciting as it felt like it was written by Santa especially for him.
The story is a generic story where your child's details are inserted into the storyline so they become a part of the story.

There are a number of titles to choose from including popular Disney books such as Disney Princesses, Toy Story, Cars, Dora, Elmo and many more. Two sizes are available in most of the titles and come in Standard Size (225mm x 165mm) or Big (275mm x 200mm).

Prices start from $10.95 for a standard book and go up to $19.95 for a BIG book (plus postage from $4.95). These books will also make unqiue gifts for that hard to buy present for all those parties.

Kids Discos
18th June 2010

Tonight was the annual school disco! I have never seen so many little legs and arms moving grooving to the tunes of the DJ.
My son had been excited all week and speaking to the other parents he didn't seem to be alone in his excitement. Apparently there were first class girls who had planned their disco outfit for weeks!

My son is usually quite reserved and shy but tonight he was a very different child. At one stage I'm sure (I could have been mistaken due to the lack of lighting) I saw him doing some very fancy footwork along with some amazing hip hop moves. As I looked around the room many children gained confidence for that hour and a half through dance and it was great to see. I was also surprised to hear how many children knew the words to many of the popular songs that were being played. It was just unfortunate that I went to bed with Justin Biebers 'Baby' song singing over and over in my head.

If your children like to "cut loose" on the dance floor every given opportunity, maybe you should take advantage of the many 'kids discos' scheduled around town on a regular basis.

  • Lollipop's Playland and Cafe Kotara-Run a monthly disco on the first Friday of the month from 5.30pm. Entry price is $10.90 for kids (parents $4) and you can get a dinner and disco ticket for $15.
  • Megamania hold a weekly Friday disco from 5pm-8pm. Bookings are recommended and entry price is $13.90 for children 2-12 years.
  • Wallsend Diggers-Each month the Wallsend Diggers Kids Disco in scheduled in the middle of the month on a Sunday from 1pm-3pm. Cost is $3 per child and is recommended for children 0-12 years.
  • Hunter Sports Centre- is currently holding a Friday Night Fever Kids Disco in the Gym.It is held from 7pm-9pm and costs $10 per child and includes a drink and a packet of chips.
  • Hunter Ice Skating- A Friday afternoon Kids Disco is held from 4.30pm-6.30pm during the school terms and a Family Disco on Saturday nights from 7.30pm-10pm.

Winter Coats
Our Favourites
17th June 2010

With the weather suddenly turning cold (well cold enough for me to layer the bed with 5 blankets and a hot water bottle by my feet each night), it was time to head out for some winter coats for the kids.
NB: My sister-in-law laughs from her home in England when we say that it is getting down to 18 degrees during the day. This is definitely cold enough for me and although they say children don't feel the cold, it was time to layer up the kids.

I recently purchased some lovely coats from Country Road but needed something that was more for everyday rather than special occasions so today I hit the shops to look for a warm coat for my daughter.
Although I came back with a few bits and pieces I could not find what I was looking for. I have to say I felt like the woman who went to the supermarket for milk and came back with everything but.

I decided it was time to hit the virual world and browse online for a winter coat from the warmth of my home. Success!
Four coats to share (maybe not for pre-school but coats that are too beautiful not to share with everyone) with you all.

Clockwise from top;

  1. Oobi Raspberry Swing Coat-  The wool- blend Tweed Swing Coat is fully lined and features the Oobi signature print, Confetti Dot on the inside of the hood. Dizzyland
13th June 2010

Today we went to the park. Just the local park with a children's playground but the kids love the play equipment and these days there is a lot more than just a set of swings I grew up with.
The 'Whizzy thing' in the local park is the kids favourite and you can hear the shrills of laughter from our house. For me, my stomach turns everytime I spend a couple of minutes on it and our trampoline gives me head spins. I'm sure my tolerance levels were greater when I was young.

If your children love rides and look forward to heading to any amusement fairs that come to town each year, Dizzyland is the place to take your family. No more waiting for Dodgem Cars, Ferris Wheels or Merry-Go-Rounds to come to town. At Dizzyland, you can ride any weekend of the year!

Dizzyland Event Park is an indoor/outdoor amusement park where you can ride all day on weekends, school holidays and public holidays from10am-4pm and in the summer holidays from 6pm-10pm. Make a day of it with free gas BBQs and picnic tables on site.

Unlike many other amusement centres, parents don't have to pay to get in and this long weekend take advantage of their $10 per person unlimited rides pass for Dizzyland's 2nd Birthday celebration. There will be Karaoke, lucky door prizes and plenty of games and laughter.

Walnut Melbourne
9th June 2010

I have to admit that there I times I have to double check the price listed on a pair of children's shoes. I always try and buy good quality shoes for our children as good quality and sturdy shoes are so important in the development of growing little feet. We have always stuck to a popular well known shoe brand for our children but I am finding that each year their shoes aren't as appealing with colour choice and style. And the price is outrageous!

Last summer I was delighted to see Walnut Melbourne kid's shoes being stocked at particular retailers in Newcastle. Although there is always the option to purchase online, it's extremely important for the kids to try on the shoes for size and comfort. We purchased the Navy Cuiser (pictured above) and the canvas Mary Jane which were very comfortable and most importantly affordable. With the constant growing children's foot, I am mindful about spending a lot of money for shoes that will be grown out of in a season.

I follow the SAC rule when purchasing kid's shoes; Stylish, Afforable and most importantly Comfortable. Walnut's shoes have all of these qualities and more.
Walnut has just a fabulous range of winter shoes to choose from including Desert Boots, Mary Jane Suede, Patent Leather and canvas shoes and a beautiful selection of Ballet flats priced from RRP$29.95 to $79.95. Casual or more formal, they have shoes covered.

Walnut Melbourne shoes are available from Lollipop Kids in Hamilton, Blue Star Elements Newcastle, Posh Tots Warners Bay, Vintage Iris Maitland, Golly Gumdrops Kurri Kurri, Corner Secrets Nelson Bay, Pizazz Boutique Nelson Bay, David Jones Kotara and Wilson and Hunter Pokolbin Hunter Valley.

To see the full range of Walnut Melbourne shoes for kids CLICK HERE, but be very careful as they also sell the most exquisite shoes for women as well.

Toy Story 3
8th June 2010

We are counting down the days till Toy Story 3 hits the big screen! We have seen the previous Toy Story Movies, however this is more exciting to the kids, as being a little older since the last two they have realised through all the junk mail that arrives daily that there is promotional material and TOYS that go with this movie.

I love the Toy Story movies as they portray a sense of innocence with no adult themes that parents should be concerned with. What could be more innocent than toys? I also love the fact that there are the occasional humorous lines thrown in that only adults would get creating a family movie favourite.

[Mr. Potato Head watches hopefully as Andy open birthday presents]
Mr. Potato Head: "Mrs. Potato Head, Mrs. Potato Head, Mrs. Potato Head... hey, I can dream, can't I?"
                                                                                                                                              Toy Story 1995

Woody tries to save his friends but they all end up stowing away in a box that is headed for Sunnyside Daycare. Although the toys are keen to start a new life at Sunnyside Daycare, Woody has his suspicions and leaves to find Andy. As he tries to escape he ends up in the hands of a little girl from the Daycare who takes him home to meets her toys. After getting to know them , he finds out from her toys that all is not what it seems at Sunnyside Daycare.
Woody quickly realises that he must save his friends and get back to Andy before he leave.

Walka Water Works
6th June 2010

With the sun shining it was time to get out of the house and head to Walka Water Works in Oakhampton. This is a place that keeps the whole family entertained with what it has to offer. Now I hesitate in telling you about this hidden treasure as it is a location that is not overcrowded by people, the grounds are spacious and the beauty of this glorious pumping station when you drive in is a sight you have to see.

If you haven't been to Walka Water Works before you may not know it's history and what facilities it has. The Walka Waters Works is a 19th Century pumping station located near Maitland. It was orginally built in 1887 to supply water to Newcastle and the Lower Hunter Valley and has since been restored and preserved as a part of Maitland City Council's Walka Recreation and Wildlife Reserve. The Pumphouse is no longer open to the public which is a shame as it is a magificent building which should be utilsed given its history.

The main reason we head to the Walka Water Works is for the miniature railway that runs every Sunday around a 2 kilometre track. Our kids love it!
The railway follows the contours of the lake past various varieties of bird and wildlife in a natural bushland setting. The railway is run purely by volunteers who work tirelessly on keeping the track maintained for the enjoyment of families. You can also book the train for birthday parties and school excursions. The rides cost $3 per person and run from 11am every Sunday, however you will not be permited to ride if you are not wearing enclosed shoes.

If you are not interested in the Miniature Railway, the extensive playground and BBQ areas are perfect for a weekend picnic with family and friends. Wood fired and electric BBQ's are available as with public toilet facilities. It is the perfect time of year to visit Walka Water Works when the sun is shining however it can get quite cool around the lake, so it is advisable to bring a warm coat, especially for the kids. A wonderful day out for all the family!

Walka Water Works is located at Scobies Lane Oakhampton and group or party enquiries for the Miniature railway can be made by calling Frank Goggarty on 4932 5439.

Little Billies
5th June 2010

We were very lucky on Friday night at our Fundraiser to have been donated by Little Billies Positive Parenting Tools two My Week Charts. I have to admit, there was a split second I wanted to keep them for myself as they are visually appealing and such a great way to organise your family schedule for the week.

If you haven't come across Little Billies before, they are magnetic resuable Reward and Routine Charts where children learn through positive reinforcement. Founder, Owner and Head Designer Sarah Dawson started Little Billies when she was unable to find suitable products on the market to support her belief that learning should be fun, that children love to be involved and that building a child's self confidence needs to start early.

Little Billies have just launched their new range of Reward and Routine Charts that capture children's imaginations to bring out positive change in behaviour. The new designs are colourful, fun and visually depict a range of activities and behaviours to illustrate your child's progress through positive recognition and reward designs.

The designs are graphics that children can identify with including dinosaurs, flowers, cars, fairies and rockets and usually suit most decor where the charts reside. They are also personalised with each child's name, giving a sense of ownership and is often more encouraging for each child when they are aware that, that is their chart.
Little Billies now offer a comprehensive range of co-ordinated sets which include a Reward Chart, Day Chart, Week Chart and morning and evening Routine Schedules. The charts are priced from RRP$32.50 and the sets of magnets can be purchased from RRP$7.50.

To view the full range of new designs or to purchase from the Little Billies website CLICK HERE.

Stephanie Alexander's Kitchen Garden
31st May 2010

I remember watching an episode of Jamie's School Dinners where he was asking the kids at school in the UK what each vegetable was and it was very sad to see that there was a large contingent who couldn't tell the difference between an avocado and asparagus.
This is also very often the case in Australia hence the push on the 'Go for 2 & 5 website' campaign about families eating two pieces of fruit and five vegies a day.

If you have been a Masterchef viewer you may have heard about the Stephanie Alexander Garden Foundation. The Stephanie Alexander Garden program is a pleasurable food education for young children. The underlying belief is that by introducing this holistic approach there is a chance to positively influence children's food choices in ways that have not been tried before. A Kitchen Garden teaches children about the natural world and it's beauty and how to care for it.

There is specific fixed fundamentals that is an effective recipe for the Kitchen Garden program, one being avoiding the word 'healthy' when describing food to children and overall, every activity in the kitchen and garden should be an enjoyable experience.

The Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden has rolled out into many schools across the country and it involves children across years 3 to 6 spending a minimum of 40 minutes per week in an extensive vegetable garden they have helped design and build and maintain on the school grounds accroding to organic gardening principles. They also spend one and a half hours per week in a kitchen classroom preparing and sharing a variety of meals created from their produce. Two local schools participating in the Stephanie Alexander Garden Kitchen program is Black Hill Public School and Mayfield East Public School.

Lollipop Baby
30th May 2010

I have to admit that there are babies you may have to second guess the gender of when they are born. It's not that they look like any gender in particular, but that they just look like a baby to people who are not used to baby looking faces.
There was no mistake (or so I believed) with my children and you could tell when I had the boy and when I had the girls. HOWEVER, to some "oldies" passing in the street, there was one incident when one gentleman said isn't he lovely. Now this was strange for a number of reasons. One being Matilda was the most girly looking baby I had seen and two, she was wearing ALL pink at the time. Go figure!

One way combat any confusion when the bubs still look like bubs (and if you don't want to stick one of those bow bands on the little girls head), is to purchase a personalised onesie or t-shirt from 'Lollipop Baby'.

'Lollipop Baby' is owned and designed by mum-of-two (congratulations Linda on your new arrival) Linda Bradley, whose love of quirky children's images reflected her aspirations as a modern mother. The designs translate the fun, the excitement and the fast paced technological environment today's children have been lucky enough to have been born into. In addition to her personalised and regular apparel designs, Linda also designs personalised nursery art prints which can be personalised with birth details including weight, time of birth etc.

You can purchase a personalised onesie or t-shirt for RRP$32.95 and wall art for RRP$24.95 for an 8' x 10' or A4 print. To see the full range of Lollipop Baby's products CLICK HERE. A unique, personalised gift!

There are no licensed products or inappropriate images, and focuses on innocent yet "boy" themes including trains, trucks and cars, cowboys, circus, under the sea and many more.

EcoViva
26th May 2010

My kids spend a alot of time outdoors when the weather is pleasant, especially in summer. There have been times where we have set up morning tea or tea parties on the old picnic blanket out on the grass but it usually ends up covered in food and need to be put through the machine afterwards. One thing we would love is a durable ground covering that is soft yet easy to maintain for our little outdoor get togethers.

EcoViva are the perfect ground covering for indoor or outdoor use. Whether it's childcare, camping, holiday homes, picnics, parties, beach, accenting outdoor living or high traffic areas. EcoViva mats will bring some fun, colour and excitement to any environment.

Flavourfest-Hunter Valley Gardens
24th May 2010

I don't know about you but each year for around 13 weeks I find myself inspired by Masterchef. I have to say as a mother I have lost my motivation for cooking as home made chicken nuggets, spaghetti bolognaise and sausages are far from gourmet but it is the only thing on the kid's plates that goes down without a fight.

There are some days that I envisage myself a contestant and try and time myself on cooking up a storm in our kitchen...but alas...instead of a 3 course meal in 45 minutes, it takes over an hour for one course. There are also days I would love to whip up something a little more exotic but that would mean cooking more than one meal which ends up being just more dishes to clean.

If you would like to escape your kitchen for some fabulous inspiration by celebrity chefs demonstrations, fine food, exquisite wine and great music, don't miss out on Flavourfest at Hunter Valley Gardens over the June long weekend. (12th June-14th June).
I love events that the cater for all member of the family and this event has kids covered with the 'Kids in the Kitchen' kids cooking area, the storybook jumping castle ,face painting and roaming clowns and musicians.

From 12th June to the 14th June Hunter Valley Gardens will host a culinary extravaganza showcasing the flavours and sounds of the Hunter and beyond. Each day will feature a different celebrity chef, Tobie Puttock 12th June, Janelle Bloom 13th June and Pete Evans 14th June that will show you how to cook culinary delights. In addition to the celebrity chefs there will be several award winning local chefs showcasing inspiring techniques and delicious recipes.

The is definitely a day the whole family can enjoy! For entry prices across the three day event CLICK HERE.

The Whales are Here!
23rd May 2010

One thing we haven't attempted as yet with the kids is whale watching from a boat cruise, however this is definitely something I want them to experience at a young age. I think we will wait though to book a cruise until the littlest family member is a little bit older and has a bit more water safety.

The first whale sightings occur around Mid May each year as they travel north to inhabit the warm waters of Queensland until August. Over the winter months about 3000 whales will pass by with full bellies and the thoughts of a possible mate. You may just catch a glimpse of the beautiful humpback or the southern right whale if you have the perfect vantage point.

If you are not too comfortable with boat cruises with children, there are some great spots around Newcastle and Port Stephens where you may just catch a glimpse of pods of whales playing in the water. Strzelecki lookout, Tomaree national park, Fisherman's Bay and Stockton Beach are usual haunts of keen whale watchers. The top of King Edward Park is also a great view to witness frolicking whales.

If you want to get a little closer for a better veiw, there are many chartered boats that do whale watching tours. Some companies include Nova Cruises which offer a 3 hour cruise and departs from Newcastle Harbour. Moonshadow cruises offer a 2.5-3 hour cruise and depart from Nelson Bay Marina. They are currently offering a 15% discount on Whale and Dolphin cruises if you book online.

Next time you are close to the coast, take a peek to see if you can see a puff of spray jetting skyward. This is just something that the kids will love!

Happy Birthday Thomas!
21st May 2010

It's amazing to believe that a children's  fictional character created 65 years ago is just as popular today as the day it was created. I wonder if Reverend Wilbert Awdry knew that the stories he wrote for his young son when he was recovering from scarlett fever would create such a phenonmenon today.

We, for one are experts on the subject matter with Thomas being the main attraction in our house for 4 years. I can name pretty much every train and have watched most of the episodes over time (even the new episodes with the moving mouths) with my son.
He received his first 'Thomas' train when he was two and by three I think he had around five 'take along' cases full of Thomas & Friends trains. We have all the accessories and have been to several Thomas the Tank engine concerts, train days at popular railways and have visited the Train Shed in Luddenham where you can ride behind Thomas and Friends. When all is said and done it has been money well invested and to this day I still believe it is the best "innocent" toy a child should definitely be introduced to.

This year sees the 65th anniversary since the inception of Thomas and Friends and to celebrate, Toys R Us are holding a national birthday party on Saturday 22nd May between 11am and 1pm.
Head to Toys R Us at Wesfield Kotara where you can join in the birthday activities. There will be balloons, fun and games including; making your own Thomas birthday card, story book reading, Thomas trivia, colouring and more. There will also be a Thomas and Friends play mat where you can bring your own Thomas and Friends for some play time.
NB: If you are bringing your own Thomas trains it is advised to label all trains to ensure that all trains go home with you.

BARK
20th May 2010

Each week I try to head up to my son's school to assist his class with reading. The children all vary in ability but also in confidence. There are a few children who find it hard to read allow to family let alone a stranger.
If you feel that your child may need assistance in gaining self esteem and confidence, BARK (Building Reading Confidence for Kids) may be the perfect environment for your child to feel heard without being criticised.

BARK is an eight week program during school term that allows children to practice their reading on a one-to-one basis to a trained therapy dog. The dog's trainer will sit near-by to assist the child if needed. Each session is 15 minutes and each family must commit to the full eight  week program.

BARK dogs are trained through the Delta Dogs Pet Partners program. This program involves temperament testing of dogs and training the volunteers to become pet partner teams. Volunteers and their Delta dogs also visit hospitals and nursing homes. The dog trainer has also completed a working with children check.

The BARK program is beneficial to all children struggling with their reading. The dogs in BARK love to listen and children feel less self conscious when they have their furry friend sitting opposite them listening to them read. The child will have the same dog each week so a bond is formed and confidence is gained.

BARK is available through various Lake Macquarie City Library branches. For more information contact 4921 0463.

Blackbutt Reserve Update
18th May 2010

Newcastle is just so lucky to have this amazing nature reserve on our doorstep. It is a family favourite of ours as with many other parents who frequent Blackbutt on a daily basis for one reason or another. Whether you are heading there for a party or just meeting up with mums for a play, it's the perfect place to get the kids outside in the fresh air with so much to see and do.

If you haven't been for a while you may notice a few changes at the Carnley Rd entrance next time you visit. There are more undercover picnic tables and another playground for when it gets really busy. Although many who visit Blackbutt may know what it has to offer but a few things you may not know about include;

  • Koala Encounters run daily at 2pm where you can experience a close encounter with the gorgeous koalas. Bookings are no required for public encounters and cost $3.50 per person. Private encounters are available with a number of animals includiing koalas, wombats, diamond pythons and blue tounge lizards for groups of 1-10 people at a minimum price of $35.
  • As of the 1st March 2010 a park conservation fee was introduced to assist with improvements and future conservation of the reserve. The $4 a day parking fee applies to carparks at Richley Reserve and Carnley Ave. Definitely money well spent.
  • The Pioneer Cafe at Carnley Ave is run by dedicated volunteers and is your one stop shop for souvenirs, cold drinks, tea and coffee and a range of confectionary items. Did you know that for 50 cents you can purchase an ice cream cone to feed to emus? Full of delicious seeds and grains, this is a great opportunity to get up close with the emus.
  • Instead of sending your spouse to secure a table at 5am for little Johnny's party, book a spot to guarantee your area on the day of your function. Rates differ from weekday to weekend rates but vary from $72 to $160 and can be booked on 02 4904 3344.

Don't forget that Spotlight Adventures runs every Saturday evening in May. For more information CLICK HERE.

Disney on Ice- A Disneyland® Adventure
17th May 2010

Last week was an expensive week with a credit card overload on upcoming shows for the kids. We don't go overboard with tickets to kid's shows but one show that we always try to secure tickets to is the Disney on Ice productions.

Disney on Ice a Disneyland® Adventure is this year's production and will be appearing at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre in the July school holidays. Join Mickey, Minnie, Cinderella & Snowhite, Buzz Light Year and many of the other Disney favourites in a show that brings the Disneyland themepark 'downunder'. Many of the popular Disneyland attractions will be the main focus of the production including The Haunted Mansion, The Pirates of the Caribbean and the popular spinning teacups.

Disney on Ice a Disneyland® Adventure will be appearing at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre from Thursday 8th July to Sunday 11th July. The shows are scheduled at 11am and 2.30pm daily with an additional show scheduled at 6pm on Saturday night. Ticket prices are Front Row-$65.50, VIP-$52.50, A-Reserve-$39.50 and B-Reserve-$28.50.

Tickets are available from Ticketek or by phoning 4921 2112.

Alphabet Street Tip- I spent two hours on the computer the other night trying to secure the best A Reserve seats using the Ticketek website. Each time I would get the best available seats at that time, but would have preferred side seating instead of the seats given. I finally took a section where we were given Row G. The next evening I went back online to see what tickets were available and was very disappointed to see that I could have gotten tickets in the same section but two rows in front 24 hours later. This doesn't make sense when you are booking 24 hours earlier, and you expect to get better seats.
It is highly recommended to phone and speak to a consultant where they can look and see what seats are available giving you a better option.

Wholesome Productions
Kids' Cooking Kits and Bits
16th May 2010

My kids always love to get involved when I bake. It's quite funny that my four year old daughter will spend time in her play kitchen on a daily basis creating delicious treats for us all, but it is my 6 year old son who jumps at the chance to don a chef hat when there is real cooking involved.

How many of you encourage your kids into the kitchen? Research suggests that those children who are involved in preparing their meals, are more inclined to eat more healthily and especially what they have "cooked".
'Wholesome Productions' make kids' cooking kits and bits to help children take a keen interest in cooking by encouraging them to make, touch, taste, smell and learn while making a variety of nutritionally inspired recipes. Their aim is to promote cooking skills, healthy eating and nutritional learning through hands on experience.

'Wholesome Productions' make a range of different cooking products for your little 'Master Chef'.  The Kids' Cooking kits come with everything they need to make their own wholesome creations including apron and chef's hat, cookie cutters, wooden spoon, rolling pin and recipe card. And for something a little different you can't go past the Pizza Baking Kit that comes in it's own pizza box containing, apron and chef's hat, 10" pizza tray, laminated 22 page recipe card, wooden rolling pin and wooden spoon.

Try a cooking party for your kids where you can purchase everything you need in a DIY kit  from 'Wholesome Productions'.  Not only do they supply everything you need to get baking, they also have a range of party invitations, decoration and treat bags for your guests to remember the fun filled day by.  For more information on the full range of products available from 'Wholesome Productions' CLICK HERE.

Richmond Vale Railway
Model Railway Exhibition
14th May 2010

As mentioned previously, my son, from day dot has had a love of trains. Trains of all shapes and sizes and started off (as most boys do) with the Thomas the Tank Engine range. At six years old he has now advanced to a Hornby Railway.
I hear the train enthusiasts shout " A Hornby Railway at age 6?! Are you mad?"
For those not familiar with Hornby, it's very intricate and VERY expensive to set up a full Hornby track. It doesn't just involve trains, you have model buildings, mountains, grass, people and track!

The trains themselves can cost up to $1000 each for trains with real steam or replicas of olden day steam trains or modern trains of today such as the Eurostar are a little less.
My husband recently made a Hornby train board that is set up in my son's room but is a little light on at the moment with some track and railway crossings costing around $30 each. It is a work in progress!

If you love the model railway but can only afford to admire from a distance, Richmond Vale Railway Museum is holding their annual Model Railway exhibition this weekend. The Model Railway Exhibition offers the visitor an opportunity to see a large variety of model railways in many different scales. The model railways are on display at the Richmond Main and the Pelaw colleries and visitors can travel between the two sites on a full sized train.  The experienced trainspotter will love seeing the different sized gauge tracks and for those little ones not as experienced will just love seeing the trains going around on the model railway.

Miniature train rides will also be available at an additional cost outside the entry building. The gates will open from 10am on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th May and will cost ;Adults $15, Children (5-15 years)-$7 and children under 5 are free. For more information on the Richmond Vale Railway Museum-Model Railway Exhibition CLICK HERE.

Octopus Kids
13th May 2010

Our family is made up of 50% Australian an 50% English backgrounds. There is no non english speaking influence at all and my son at age 6.5 years has picked up an English accent on a few words. Unlike many Australian families that have a mulitcultural element, non-english speaking relative in their life, my children will have to wait until high school before they can learn other languages (unless Dora the Explorer is on constant rotation).

If you would like to introduce another language to your child from a young age or nuture their background heritage as well as learning English, Octopus Kids are the specialists in bilingual learning for babies, toddlers and early readers.
Octopus Kids have not only created a wide range of bilingual products that address the developmental benefits of  play, they have brought you your favourite titles in Greek and Italian for baby, toddler and early readers. The range includes pop-up and board books, CD's, DVD's, and educational and interactive toys. You will find popular titles including Spot, The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Charlie and Lola written in Greek and Miffy, Pimpa and Five Little Ducks written in Italian.

In addition to the range above, they sell a range of 12 bilingual, interactive dolls that speak 10 different languages. Japanese, Italian, Korean, Spanish, Russian, Chinese, Greek, German, French and Hebrew are all languages your children can have exposure to with the 'Language Littles' family interactive dolls.
The dolls are 16 inches tall, appealing, soft  and are dressed in colourful fashions that are removable. They speak up to 30 child friendly words and phrases, from greetings, numbers, favourite colours, days of the week, familiy members and special hobbies. With the press of a palm, the doll will say the word or phrase in English followed by the second language version. The dolls are priced at RRP$69.95 and are available from Octopus Kids.

Hollywood by the Harbour
12th May 2010

Traditionally most outdoor cinema events usually occur in the summer months, however with a backdrop such as Newcastle Harbour the season becomes irrevelant.

On Saturday May 22nd, Livesites will present a free outdoor cinema event, 'Hollywood by the Harbour' which will offer something for the whole family. The event will be separated into three sessions and will include a variety of movies as well as a 'Wii challenge'.
The day will commence at 10am at Lee Wharf Honeysuckle where 'The Adventures of Milo and Otis' will screen. This is a great family film however with families invited to bring their dog on a leash (plus a plastic bag for unwanted toilet stops), it may deter some families with small children not used to dogs to decline the event.

The fabulous film 'Ratatouille' (one of our family favourites) will follow at at 11.45am and run until 1.15pm. There will be limited seating provided for the family sessions at Lee Wharf and it is advised to bring your own sun protection. For those who are keen Wii fans, be prepared to play it out on big screen from 1.30pm-3pm where those who participate will have a chance to enter a draw on the day to win a place.

For the parents who may wish to experience a little time without the children, head to the Honeysuckle Promenade where you can dine at one of the wonderful restaurants Honeysuckle has to offer and then take in a film. 'Casablanca' will commence at 6pm followed by 'Strictly Ballroom' at 8.30pm.
This is intended to be a sophisticated affair and those attending are requested to dress in their best 'Casablanca' or 'Strictly Ballroom' inspired attire. For those not choosing to dine at the Honeysuckle Restaurants there will be refreshments available at nearby restaurants and shops. The evening will finish at around 10pm.

Westfield Style Me Party
10th May 2010

Did you find that as a single women with no kids you knew how to dress, you knew what fashions and trends were in and you probably spent the majority of you salary on looking just fabulous? Has this changed from your transition to motherhood? So why do mums struggle with working out what are the perfect styles for them as mothers.

I can put my hand up along with many other mums and say I would love a fresh look but just end up doing the 'mummy' uniform out of sheer comfort. Also, the budget just isn't the same from the days you could invest in some designer pieces. And a lot of the time you will find the clothes budget being swallowed up with the endless need for kids clothes.

But as a few of us learnt on the weekend, you don't need a large budget to look fashionable.
Last Saturday nine lucky Alphabet Street Subscribers (plus me) were treated to a Westfield Style Me Party. This incorporated a private room with Westfield Stylist Kirsty Pryjma, catering, tea tasting from The Tea Centre and a goodie bag to take home.

Kristy and the model will go through various ways you can dress up or down key wardrobe staples like jeans and how best to make them suit your body shape. There are some general rules for different body shapes and this is where a lot of mums come unstuck.

Style Me Parties are still available to book for 10 friends until the end of May. To secure a party you need to pay  a fully refundable $100 deposit. This party is highly recommended for a great girls day out and lasts around an hour. If you feel like you need more specialised attention you could book Kristy privately to go shopping with you at $80 an hour. To book a Style Me Party email  kotara.reception@au.westfield.com

Lake Macquarie Variety Playground
8th May 2010

We have a few regular parks we like to frequent and the Lake Macquarie Variety Playground is one of those parks that is recommended for all families.

The $1.4 million first stage of the playground was opened in June 2008 and has been a place where children of all ages and abilities can play and interact together. The unique concept of the park is to increase physical activity, health and well being for all children no matter what their individual needs are. The playground has been designed to be physically accessible and socially inclusive to children of all abilities.

Stage 1 of the park incorporates climbing nets, clanging chimes, boardwalks, slides, swings and ramps creating an interactive environment for all children. The park also includes a Liberty Swing for children confined to wheel chairs.
The next stage of the $5 million development has commenced and will extend across 1.5 hectares to include Big Swing Zone, Sensory Garden, Maze Zone, Water Play Zone and much more.

Between April and July 2010, construction will commence including construction of the 'Circuit Zone' where children will be able to learn to use their wheels safely including real life traffic signs, speed bumps, roundabouts and pedestrian crossings. There will also be bike racks, and picnic shelters and seating.

Post July 2010 the major construction will be underway with construction of the other "zones". During this time there will be playground closures but will be advised closer to the time. The playground is due to be completed in early 2011 with all the new additions.

Bluebelle
7th May 2010

There was a time in my sister and my lives that each year we would get a Christmas gift from a relative, that contained pyjamas and a sensible pair of undies. Now way back then when we were young, that was the present that was probably not liked the most because it didn't didn't feel like an exciting toy to add to the collection of exciting toys from Santa!
Funny how things change. These days I am always desperate for pyjamas and a new pair of sensible undies (unless they were Bridget Jones style and then they would be going straight back to the person who bought them for me).

With winter on the horizon, we need to do a singlet and undies shop for the kids to get ready for the colder months. At the moment the bonds singlets are so small on them and wouldn't be doing the job of keeping them warm. The singlets and undies are usually stock standard and nothing special. However it would be quite nice to buy the kids something a little more 'special' that is comfortable yet a little more appealing. Enter 'Bluebelle Underwear'!

'Bluebelle Underwear' is a super fun collection of unique yet practical underwear! They come in a range of delicious styles for both boys and girls and are made from layer upon layer of luxuriously soft ,organically grown cotton, inspired by the 1950's style bloomers. It feels like soft silk on beautiful skin...

The signature Frilly Frenchi's have been especially designed to allow little girls to be free at play whilst protecting their innocence and modesty. These are the sort of underwear of would have embraced when I was younger. Every little girl will love the femininity with the gorgeous ruffles and the beautiful range of colours they come in.

'Bluebelle Underwear' is designed in Australia, made from 95% bamboo cotton and 5% spandex and is priced at around RRP$24.95 for a gorgeous set. To see the range of stockists you can purchase the Bluebelle collection from CLICK HERE.

Toddlers to Tweens Seminar
5th May 2010

It only seems like yesterday we were seeking advice on newborn sleeping routines and now my eldest child is on the cusp of 'tweenhood'. Where does that time fly and what tools do I need to embrace this transition?

Lollipop's Playland and Cafe-Newcastle
May Madness
4th May 2010

My daughter was invited to a pre-school friend's party at Lollipops Playland and Cafe on Sunday morning.
The minute we walked in, my daughter was off with her friends. She knows the place well after many trips there on weekends (especially rainy weekends) and even had her second birthday party there a couple of years ago.

That was the first time I had a child's birthday off site as previously it was the big birthday bash at home. Jumping castles, clowns, games, party food etc were all held and organised at home. But with home parties, comes the stress and doesn't end up costing any less than having it off site.
As the mums sat around watching our children play, the play equipment keeping them entertained and the Lollipop's Staff looking after them in the party room, we all concured that parties at Lollipops were just too easy and keep the sanity of all parents involved.

If you are considering booking a party at Lollipop's Playland, this month is the time to do it. 'May Madness' has a range of specials to take advantage of only across the month of May if you add their Facebook page to your 'Like' pages.
You have a choice of three options which will ultimately save you money.

  1. $50 OFF any party package if you book and pay your deposit in May. The party can occur any time in 2010.
  2. Dinner and disco for $10 instead of $15
  3. $5 entry with a paid adult entry. Limit of two children per adult entry.

All offers in 'May Madness' have to be printed off from Lollipop's Playland's Facebook page to be redeemed and are only valid until 31st May 2010. To join up to Lollipop's Playland and Cafe Newcastle Facebook page for great offers CLICK HERE.

Triple Zero Kid's Challenge
3rd May 2010

Our kids are only 20 months, 4 and 6 and 1/2 so we haven't been big advocators of computer games to date.  However with our son learning computers in school, he is spending a bit more time surfing the web.

One website that is essential for all small children is the Triple Zero Kid's Challenge which teaches children about emergencies and emergency services by playing games and solving mysteries. It's terrible to say that only my eldest child has a partial understanding  of what to do in an emergency. We have taught them in an emergency to call Triple Zero but that's as far as it has gone so far. Do they really understand what an 'emergency' situation is?

The Triple Zero Kid's Challenge website teaches children how to deal with various emergency situations from witnessing a car accident, being involved in a house fire, calling for help when someone is hurt or unconscious and dealing with 'stranger danger'. My kids sat here tonight going through the various interactive scenrarios and were very interested in learning what the screen was telling them. They learnt about safety messages and heard what happens when you call Triple Zero. Along the way they met the 'Zero's' that guided them step by step through the game.

I love how after each scenario they remind and reinforce the message with a recap on what to do if you are ever faced with that scenario.  The 'Triple Zero' is the main focus in each situation which brings the call to action 'top of mind' in an emergency situation. I have to say that I learnt some things along the way too. I learnt that it is imperative to have an escape plan in a fire, and our address and phone number should be placed somewhere the kids can access it. Two simple things that have been on the list of things to do but we haven't gotten around to it. This is now at the top of the list.

This is one website that I feel every child should take a look at and use it to gain understanding of the emergency services available. It teaches in a very basic but informative way so every child of all ages should understand it. For more information and to teach your children more about emergency situations CLICK HERE.

Clothkits
2nd May 2010

I am a self taught sewer, but at school when we had to sew, mum was the one that finished off all my projects for me. Oops!

I now love creating items of clothing for my kids from various patterns and love seeing them in the finished item. I come from a family of sewers and creative beings, so I must have caught the creative gene at some point in my life.

I love how my husband bought me an overlocker as a gift for delivering my second child. It has been fabulous friend and have enjoyed it immensely! (Thanks Loz). But alas, with limited time, my old friends (sewing machine and overlocker) and I have parted ways for a short time but will be reunited soon when I get a creative urge to produce little fashion for my kids again.

If you have the desire to create wonderful clothes for kids but don't have the experience, Clothkits are a perfect start.
The heritage of Clothkits span 40 years and were originally founded in 1968 by Anne Kennedy around the kitchen table. Clothkits were huge in the 80's in the UK and have re-emerged in 2008 with a fresh, new collection of gorgeous outfits for you to cut and sew at home.

Clothkits make it easy for you to make beautiful, well designed clothes without the fuss of paper patterns. All the cutting lines are printed directly on the fabric in a simple format that means even the inexperienced can make garments with ease. In addition to the fabric, the kits contain all you need to complete the project-thread, haberdashery, and of course well illustrated instructions to guide you through the project. The fabrics are screen-printed in London and are put together by hand into pretty kits for you to give or make.
And best of all, Lark online sells the kits with a wonderful selection to choose from and you don't have to pay overseas postage. To see the full range of kits LARK has to offer, CLICK HERE.

Maeve Magazine
30th April 2010

I have a few magazines I regularly pick up to flick through in my "spare time" (usually at the supermarket when I come to that isle).
My interest mostly revolves around home magazines and will always take a peek inside my favourites; 'Australian Country Style' and 'Home Beautiful' magazine. It's funny how our focus shifts and it only seems like yesterday I was pawing through my Cleo looking at what's the latest fashion and what's the latest celebrity goss. After the twenty something magazines, my focussed shifted to parenting magazines when I was pregnant with my first child. But now I find there is nothing (other than the weekly gossip mags) that I feel the need to read on a regular basis.

HOWEVER, this could now change with the launch tomorrow of a new online magazine called MAEVE which is targeting a 30-40 something women, parents and grown ups who want more from their media. With it's many talented women contributors including , Jodie Hedley-Ward author of 'You Sexy Mother',  Allison Jones Owner of LARK and some other terribly fabulous women, Maeve offers an intelligent and inspirational read and I for one can't wait for that morning cuppa and sit down to 'paw' over MAEVE.

For more information and to view the first issue of MAEVE Magazine launching tomorrow CLICK HERE.

Pregnancy Massage
29th April 2010

As I sit here and type I can feel the tightness in my shoulders and neck. I have been meaning to book in for a massage but when you are time poor finding a moment where I can relax is tough.

The last massage (that I can remember) I had was a pregnancy massage and that was two years ago. Unfortunately that is the only time I regularly book in for a massage to work through the knots, muscle cramps and back pain that are all associated with pregnancy. The benefits associated with pregnancy masage include; relieving muscle, back, neck and shoulder pain caused by muscle tension and shifts in posture to accomodate increasing weight. It can also increase circulation, improve digestion and reduce fatigue along with many other benefits.  Although it has a range of benefits for a pregnant woman, it is essential that you seek advice from a medical practioner before you book in as it may not be recommended for women who have high blood pressure or diabetes in the early stages of their pregnancy.

I have had a regular massage therapist since I was first pregnant 7 years ago. Sharon Clarke is a trained masseuse who specialises in all areas of massage including pregnancy massage. Sharon has the massage table set up so that your head, side and knees are supported with pillows while you lie on your side. I had a "pregancy massage" somewhere else and they had me sitting on a chair reversed and it just wasn't the same. It is not as relaxing and the position is not as comfortable.

Sharon's business is located upstairs at Bliss Hair Artists-56 Regent St New Lambton and is open Tuesday 2pm-8pm, Thursday 2pm-8pm, Friday 10am-5pm and Saturday 10am-4pm. Most health funds are covered for this service (remedial massage) and is priced at $42 for half hour and $64 for an hour. This is one "luxury" and necessity I truely recommend for pregnant mums-to-be. For more information call Sharon on 0416 145 058.

Go for 2 & 5
28th April 2010

We receive a lot of information sent home from the school and pre-school our children attend about the Government's health and fitness initiatives set in place to advise parents of what their children need to grow up healthily.

With the accompanying 'Good for Kids', Good for Life' TV campaign running, most of us know that as a parent our children need healthy food and exercise. One thing you may not be aware of is that the recommended daily serve of fruit is 2 pieces and 5 serves of vegies a day. I, for one, do not always eat the recommended serve however I always ensure that our kids try and get as much fruit and vegie intake as possible. But I have to admit, it proves tough at times with small children who don't have the same desire to eat fruit and vegies and would prefer to bypass them if they could.

If you are stuck for ideas when it comes to recipes that include the 2 & 5 fruit and vegies, the gofor2&5.com.au website provides you with a range of family meals you can make and hide (if need be) the fruit and vegies in. The great thing about these recipes if that underneath each recipe, it gives you the nutritional information so you will also have peace of mind when serving up your meal. There is also a kids only section that also tries to educate while keeping it fun with colouring in pages, challenges and activities. To see the full range of family recipes CLICK HERE.

Another fabulous health initiative that has been implemented through the Healthy Kids School Canteen Association is the 'Crunch & Sip' program that is currently rolling out across NSW and S.A schools. Crunch & Sip is a set break to eat fruit (or salad vegetables) and drink water in the classroom. Students 're-fuel' with fruit or vegetables in the morning or afternoon assisting physical or mental performance and concentration in the classroom. To see what local schools are involved in the 'Crunch & Sip' program or to learn more about this program CLICK HERE.

Bunnings Mother's Day Activities
27th April 2010

We still have a lot to do around our house, so we took a trip to Bunnings on the weekend with the kids.
Unfortunately, with the children's play equipment, kid's craft and the Hardware Cafe situated so close, our reason for heading to Bunnings was forgotten.

What I love about Bunnings is that you can head down to Bunnings on any weekend and always run into someone you know, and secondly there is a great mix of mums, dads, young familes and couples, grandparents and young singles down there with the same intention. It's not just a destination anymore, it's an experience for young and old.

Leading up to Mother's Day mums are definitely not forgotten and there are events and DIY workshops planned with mum in mind at Bunnings.

  • Mother's Day Family Night- Thursday 6th May 6-8pm: Head to Bunnings for a fun evening of Mother's Day gift making for all the family. Drinks and nibbles provided.
  • KID'S D.I.Y WORKSHOPS- Saturday 1st & Sunday 2nd, Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th May: Bring the kids to make Mum a special gift for Mother's Day.
  • Pot a Pressie for Mum- Thursday 6th-Sunday 9th May: Choose a plant and pot combination for Mum and Bunnings will pot it for you, tie a ribbon and include a tag free of charge.

You can also pick up from Bunnings or download it from the website the colouring in competition where your kids can win a fantastic wheelie bin full of kid's tools or a special Mother's Day card the kids can personalise with their own creativity.

For more information or to download the colouring competition entry or the Mother's Day card CLICK HERE.

Mums Grapevine
26th April 2010

I have to say I am a hard person to reach with traditional media vehicles when being targeted by kid's brands or products. I have a few core TV programs I watch outside of ABC Kids, I don't listen to local radio and I don't read the newspaper so finding out about local or online kid's sales proves a little difficult or end up being too late for the sale.

Subscribing to mumsgrapevine.com.au is the solution for busy mums on the go who spend more time on their computer than anywhere else and need  a comprehensive list of sales being posted in their inbox on a regular basis. 'Mum's Grapevine' is Australia's No.1 sales alert newsletter. The free weekly newsletter tells mums where all the hot sales are on for maternity, baby, and children's clothing, toys, books, accessories, nappies, nursery items and more.

Each week  you will receive information on Secret Boutique Sales, End of Season sellouts, Pop-Up sale locations, Factory Direct Clearances, Ticket Only Events, Exclusive Discount Codes, Member Only Deals and Online Special Offers. Last week there was a fabulous beanbag offer from 'teeny me' that is exclusive to Mums Grapevine members and boy was it a fantastic offer. But you will only know about it if you subscribe to their newsletter. You will never pay retail again!

Little Sprowtz
25th April 2010

I remember my three labours like it was yesterday.
For my first, I didn't know what to expect. I read a lot and asked a lot of questions and I remember one work colleague telling me she focused on the Nobby's Walk and getting to the end. I could never undestand until I was in labour and realised that focusing on the contractions and breathing was the only way I could get through this.

For my second, I had my plan for what worked with my first would definitely work for my second (hot water, gas and birthing chair) and this wasn't the case at all. My third I had no expectations and proved to be pretty similar to my second, only a little longer.
The TV shows that show many women in labour yelling at their husbands, doctors etc always amaze me as in my case, if I spoke I would lose concentration on the labour and feeling out of control.

If your labour turns from a calm to an out of control state, `The Midwife in a Box' by Little Sprowtz  is a perfect companion for pregnant women who require valuable tools to assist them and their birthing companions during the difficult and often frightening time of childbirth. The products included provide comfort, assist pain diversion and give peace of mind-a compact, portable midwife.

`The Midwife in a Box' contains a range of specialised, nurturing products including concentration balls, mother's massage oil, cotton blend socks, `Minty Calm' lip balm, massage ball, affirmation cards, support person and pain management cards,  soothing fragrant blend, hair elastics, washer, glucose bites, and a focus frame all packaged in a gorgeous, reusable tote bag and gift box. It is priced at RRP$59.99 and a perfect gift for the mums-to-be or birthing companion.

Mother's Day Hunter Valley Gardens
22nd April 2010

Mother's Day, the one day of the year where children and adults celebrate how wonderful their mums are.
Each year my kid's buy from the Mother's Day Stall and today my four year old came home from pre-school and said;
ISOBEL "Mum, I'm not going to tell you a secret".
ME: "What is it?"
ISOBEL: "I can't tell you, it's a secret".
ME:"Is the secret about Mother's Day?"
ISOBEL: "How did you know?"
ME: (Thinking to myself....Ah..the pre-school Mother's Day stall must be just around the corner)

The kids usually get very excited about the cards they make at school and the gifts they purchase (last year I got some "smelly stuff" from my son and a small cheese grater from my daughter) and on the day we try and catch up with the extended family to celebrate. This year won't be any different however if you would like to celebrate the day with lots of entertainment and pampering, head to Hunter Valley Gardens for the Mother's Day Celebrations.

There will be live entertainment as you enter the gardens by Grandiva between 10am and 2pm. A Pamper Zone where mums can relax in a free pamper zone with shoulder rubs, hand massages and nails painted. Cooking demonstrations of great family friendly recipes and great prizes to be won.

If you want to finish it off with a spot of lunch to enjoy the flavours of the Hunter, there are some Mother's Day menus available from the Garden Terrace in the gardens (includes entry to gardens and all activities) or the Barrel Room at Tempus Two Winery where you can enjoy a three course luncheon and a free family portrait by D & V Photography.

For more information on the activities planned or to book your Mother's Day luncheon in the Hunter CLICK HERE.

Sterntaler Equestrian Services
21st April 2010

As a child, I think 'The Man From Snowy River' movie started by interest in horses. As an adult, the period dramas such as Pride and Prejudice (has to be the BBC version with Colin firth-swoon!) regained my interest in horse riding with the vision of riding across lush English fields.
Sadly, I have only ever been on a horse a handful of times and it was far from the romantic illusion I envisaged it to be!

My father-in-law is a skilled expert in dressage and wonder if it's too late to fulfill my dream of horse riding. But alas, I do think my opportunity has come and gone but for those who seek a school for their children that teaches lessons and offers camps, Sterntaler Equestrian Services at Raymond Terrace may just be the place you are looking for.

Sterntaler Equestrian Services offer a range of classes for all levels. You can bring your own horse or use one of the quiet, educated school horses. They also have a fully enclosed indoor arena so wet weather won't dampen your lessons.
Private, Group or Shared lessons are offered and range from half to one hour in duration.
Full and half day lessons are also offered on Saturday, Sunday and daily in the school holidays where you will learn how to lead, brush and saddle your pony and include a one hour group riding lesson.

Birthday parties are scheduled on Saturday or Sundays from 12pm-3pm. The children get to brush the ponies, plait ribbons on their manes and have a one hour group ride with basic instruction and games on horseback. Drinks, lollies and a birthday cake are provided after the ride.

Lastly for the mums who like me, have always dreamed of it but have never had the chance or those mums who have and have a chance during the day to enjoy their interest, there are Ladies mornings every Thursday from 10am-12pm that include a group lesson and morning tea. For more information or to book a lesson CLICK HERE.

That's My Toy
20th April 2010

My kids do a lot of "manual play". Whether it's art and craft, playing trains and cars, or playing hide and seek, there are not a lot of toys in their play that require batteries. This means that they are engaging and interacting with each other, being creative by thinking and acting out and not relying upon a machine to tell them how to play. It's very innocent in the way they interact not only with the toy but with each other.

These days you won't find too many children's toys that don't require batteries. However there is one online toy store whose policy revolves around stocking toys that are a "battery free zone".

'That's My Toy' has been relaunched, rebranded and they are ready to get out there and play. This online store specialises in children's toys that engage and educate children, while not requiring a battery or superhero. You will find plenty of toys here that run on kid power, the most amazing power of all. 'That's My Toy' ensures that beautiful toys are sourced that inspire and develop creativity and last longer than your average plastic toy. The quality of the toy will also make you want to pass them down through the generations.

You will find a selection of games, puzzles, wooden toys, imaginative play, construction toys, art and craft sets and more by brands including, Djeco, Le Toy Van, eeboo, Automoblox, and Haba. 'That's My Toy' is also the exclusive stockist of Appletters and Pairs in Pears, children's word games that the kids will love!

With our fundraising event around the corner, 'That's My Toy' has very generously offered a percentage of it's sales from Alphabet Street readers towards the 'Let's Get Playdoh donated to the Children's Oncology Ward at the John Hunter Hospital' charity that will be valid until the 30th June 2010. So spend up big as the more sales, the more money will be generated for this worrthy cause. All you have to do is put in the code jhunter at checkout! To see the full range of products at 'That's My Toy' CLICK HERE.

Geocaching
18th April 2010

How often do you as a family do a family activity where every family member is involved?
We try to make sure we do one family activity on the weekend with the kids. Ours usually involves an outdoor, free activity where possible and bikes are usually part of the equation now we all have bikes (or trailers to include the little ones).

Geocaching is an activity that can involve the whole family, is outdoors and is free if you have a GPS. Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunting game played throughout the world by adventure seekers equipped with GPS devices. The basic idea is to locate hidden containers called geocaches outdoors using a GPS enabled device and then share your experiences online.

The GPS co-ordinates can be found online at http://geocaching.com.au/caches/gca/au/nsw/ and then put into your GPS device where you head outside to track down the "treasure". Although it is a worldwide phenomenon, there are many Newcastle caches dotted around the area.  The  GPS device will help you locate the area close to the cache but it is then up to you and your family to find the cache hidden in the area you have been brought to. Geocaches can be very cleverly hidden and the enjoyment can be in trying to find it. When you find the cache, you will need to sign the log book and if you take something from the cache (treasures) you will need to leave something of equal or greater value for the next geocachers to find. Remember to leave the cache exactly as you found it.

When you have returned home from your adventure, remember to share your experience online. It's a great way to share some family time outdoors while having some fun in the process. For more information on Geocaching CLICK HERE.

Love Paper Scissors
17th April 2010

We have quite a few gifts around the corner we need to buy for birthdays, Mother's Day etc and today was the start with a Christening tomorrow.
As usual I was stuck for ideas. My usual Christening Gift was sold out and with two little ones in tow I had to think fast.
If I had thought about it earlier there was a number of unique Christening gifts available online but time is sometimes the key if you have plenty of it. Unfortunately we did not have time on our side.
If you do have time to select gifts that are unique and timeless, 'Love Paper Scissors' has the most exquisite handmade "Bug Art Designs" that are perfect gifts for many occasions.

'Love Paper Scissors' is owned and designed by Chelsie who hand cuts every butterfly, dragonfly, loveheart and bird out before the wings are raised to give it a slight 3D impression. The finest Japanese chiyogami and specialty papers are used to create every tiny creature in her exquisite range of artworks.

'Love Paper Scissors' has something to suit all tastes and decors. The range includes contemporary colour schemes, delicate nursery creations, wedding and birthday designs and distinctively Asian accents. They are also the perfect gift for that new mum as the designs are timeless and a "Bug Art" Gift will grow with them from infancy to childhood, adolescence through to adulthood and then treasured as a family heirloom.

The "Bug Art" series start at around $55.00 for a 26cm x 20xm design and can go up to $220.00 for a 52cm x 52cm artwork. Chelsie has just launched a new selection of artwork just in time for Mother's Day. To see the full range of "Bug Art" designs or for more information CLICK HERE.

Sophie and Jack Designs
15th April 2010

I think I have the best job in the world!
Apart from being a mum, I get to research the most divine products available for kids and it's an added bonus when you come across a local designer who create quality products.

Sophie and Jack Designs is owned by Hunter Valley mum of two (Sophie and Jack) Alison Lantry who wanted to create a hair accessory that wasn't just beautiful but also affordable. Sophie and Jack Designs offer a range of hair accessories including covered buttons ponytail holders and snapclips, covered slide clips with felt flowers and covered button bobby pins which are made with the most exquisite fabrics. Be sure to check out the Babushkas hair ties and snap clips, the Strawberry Field hair elastics and the Peony Flower Hair Clips. 14th April 2010

Today we met up with some friends and took advantage of the school holiday 'Happy Hour' at SuperStrike Warners Bay.
'Happy Hour' allows you to play a game between 9am and 10am daily (school holidays only) for $5 including shoe hire.
This was the best value holiday activity as with 6 of us playing (4 kids included) it took a good hour and a half to get through ten rounds which unfortunately for the littlest ones proved a little tiring.

I hadn't been bowling for a very long time and it showed. I think I came last behind a four year old beating everyone with 98 points.
It's a great family activity full of fun and if this is something you would like to experience on a more regular basis, there are a couple of regular events that you can pencil in your diary.

  • On the first Sunday of the month at 9.30am you can bring the family along to the Family Cosmic Party. It's free to become a member and with your membership and entry fee of $7 per person you get discounted game for the entire family with a sausage sandwich and a drink at the end. There is also games and prizes and if you bring your registration card along each month there are additional prizes to be won when you receive a certain number of spares and strikes.
NB: There is no Family Cosmic Party in May but will return on the 6th June.
  • If your child loves to bowl and would like to learn how to master those strikes or spares, SuperStrike Warners Bay is holding FREE learn to bowl classes with the centre coaches on the 20th April (Part 1) and 27th April (Part 2) OR the 23rd April (Part 1) and 30th April (Part 2) at 4pm-5pm. It is open to children under 18 years of age who are beginners only. To book your free session phone 4954 2477.

Cancer Council
Fruit and Veg $ense Sessions
13th April 2010

Each night we have a battle with our 20 month year old over food. She knows that if she if she waits long enough and then says "yoyo" (Yogurt), she is done with her dinner. What is the solution?
We have had the same trouble with our first child and tried everything to get him to eat the things that were served up to him. You can't bargain with a 20 month year old but over time, our 6 year old has taken on more food and vegetables in his diet. (maybe through a little bribery) I hate to think of the food we have thrown out through sheer refusal to eat it.

As a mum, I am also very aware of the health benefits of fruit and vegetable consumption for my children and can be completely frustrating and worrying when your child refuses to eat the things you know are of benefit to them. For those that have fussy eaters or aren't as aware of the health risks of not eating fruit and vegetables, the Cancer Council are holding Fruit and Veg $ense sessions to educate parents that by increasing their fruit and vegetable intake by 50 grams can save on grocery bills and reduce the risk of developing cancer by up to 20%.

During the Fruit and Veg $ense Sessions, parents will learn how to bolster family meals with nutritious recipes that are easy to prepare, cost effective and tantalising to even the fussiest of eaters. Sessions are open to all Hunter parents with primary school children. Topics include saving on everyday recipes, putting budgeting ideas into practice and healthy tips and facts about fruit and vegetables. Participants will also receive handy resources and recipes for use at home. The sessions will be held from May to June 2010 in five locations around Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Maitland.

To book your space, contact the Eat It To Beat It Research Hotline before Wednesday April 28th on (02) 4923 0710 or email eatittobeatit@nswcc.org.au. For more information go to www.cancercouncil.com.au/eatittobeatit

Nanny McPhee Movie Review
8th April 2010

I can't say that there are too many sequels that are better than the orginal but today I took my kids to Nanny McPhee and The Big Bang and this was one movie that falls into the better category.

Five years after the Original Nanny McPhee, Emma Thompson returns as the formidable Nanny McPhee to assist a family during the World War II era. Young mother Isabel Green (Maggie Gyllenhaul) is struggling to raise her three children, Norman, Megsie and Oscar,  whilst her husband (cameo appearance Ewan McGregor) is away at war. And it doesn't get any easier when their two affluent cousins arrive from London.

On top of this, Isabel has to contend with her sneaky brother-in-law Phil (Rhys Ifans) who we find out needs to sell their farm in order to get out of a gambling debt and is getting pressure from two hit ladies who are taking the farm or an organ. He will try anything, even the unthinkable in the end to get Isabel to sign over the deeds.

Nanny McPhee arrives in order to teach the children five lessons before she can leave.
" There is something you should understand about the way I work. When you need me but do not want me, then I must stay. When you want me, but no longer need me then I have to go."- Nanny McPhee

With the screenplay written by Emma Thompson, great lines by some wonderful young actors and a few cameos by some old favourites (Ralph Fiennes, Bill Bailey and Maggie Smith), this movie is sure to delight the young and the young at heart. I found myself laughing in several places (watch out for the syncronised swimming piglets) and tearing up in the end which evoked all emotions in this heartwarming and highly entertaining film. CLICK HERE to see the official trailer of Nanny McPhee and The BIg Bang and HERE to see when you can see this delightful family film.

P.S You know it has entertained the kids when you four year old says after the movie "mummy I want to get the video of Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang" and tonight they spent the evening reliving it by watching the trailer on the computer.

Bonito Baby-Kid'Sleep Clock
7th April 2010

As I sit here and type I am fading fast.
My kids (two out of three) have been getting me up at 5am every morning since daylight savings finished and I'm exhausted. Now one child (19 month old) is kind of excused as she doesn't know it's an unacceptable time that is just going to make mum cranky waking her after just 6 hours sleep.

The other (6 year old boy) is wide awake like he has been sleeping for hours even though it is still dark outside he still doesn't get that it's clearly not time to get up yet! We have been meaning to get a clock in his room to stop him from getting out of bed but we can still hear him sniffing, huffing and moving about that we end up being wide awake anyway. So what is the solution for little ones who can't tell the time and like to wake at an ungodly hour?

Brand new to the Australian market and exclusive to Bonito Baby is the Kid'Sleep Clock. The Kid'Sleep Clock was designed by a father fed up with early morning wake ups. It features a picture of a happy bunny hiking and a sleeping bunny at night. Simply set the digital clock to the correct time, set the time you want your child to wake up and let your child know  they can get out of bed when the happy, hiking bunny is showing on the clock.
In general, this concept can be understood from approximately 2.5 years old. The clock will illuminate with a gentle light to show the sleeping bunny until it switches to the hiking bunny at the chosen time. It doesn't make any noise unless you put it onto the traditional alarm clock mode where a rooster crows at wake up time.

This is definitely a product that is on my wish list and is available from Bonito Baby for RRP$74.95. To purchase the Kid'Sleep Clock or to see the full range of fabulous products Bonito Baby stocks CLICK HERE.

The Wall Sticker Company
6th April 2010

It's no secret that I have a penchant for WALL DECALS. When we moved into our new home the brief was to paint the walls white so I could accessorize the kid's bedrooms with colourful wall decals.

I had a few designs in mind and in the end had to buy a set from a couple of stores that stocked wall decals. We had bought some very girly decals for my daughter's rooms and I had some vintage plane decals arrive from the U.S for my son but needed something else to fill up the blank canvas we had created. I chose some custom designed spots and stars from 'The Wall Sticker Company'.

The Wall Sticker Company was started by two enthusiastic friends (Fi and Jen) in Melbourne in 2006. Driven by the love of interiors and the ability to add a 'Wow" factor to any space, the product range grew rapidly and now supplies a range of designs, including a full customisation service allowing you to create something of your own.

Not only do 'The Wall Sticker Company' cater for children, they also have an extensive range of home and special occasions designs which means every room and event can be plastered with beautiful designs. The most exciting news is that 'The Wall Sticker Company' has teamed up with 'Cocoon Couture' to produce a gorgeous wall decal of 'The Enchanted Tree' that is made from environmentally friendly plywood and vintage wallpaper (RRP $350.00)

This beautiful tree comes in three colour options, is 2m high x 2m wide and can be purchased from 'The Wall Sticker Company' at RRP$275.

To purchase Cocoon Coutures 'The Enchanted Tree' wall decal or one of the unique designs from 'The Wall Sticker Company' go to www.thewallstickercompany.com.au.

Hunter Valley Gardens Easter Weekend
3rd  April 2010

If you haven't planned anything for Easter Sunday, I would highly recommend the Easter activities running at Hunter Valley Gardens.
We took the trip today and although I had a business trip there in the very early stages of development this was our first family trip to Hunter Valley Gardens and boy how it has changed!

Upon arriving we made our way to the Storybook Garden where the Easter Hunt was scheduled. The Easter Hunter occurs all day and basically the children collect the colourful plastic eggs along their journey through the Storybook Garden looking at the many nursery rhymes and storybooks along the way. We forgot our baskets but managed to find a bag for the kids to start collecting. At the end the kids trade in their plastic eggs for a bag of chocolate eggs.

Although the Giant Easter Egg Hunt is the main attraction over the Easter weekend (only scheduled for Easter Saturday and Sunday), there are many other activities to keep your children entertained however some may cost you to participate. The Storybook Jumping Castle ($3 per child), Easter craft, sack races, giant parachute, volleyball net, colouring competitions and the decorate your own gingerbread man ($5 per child) are all additional activities the kids can enjoy over the Easter weekend. Our kids were also lucky enough to be greeted by the Easter Bunny in the Storybook Garden who was giving out Easter treats.

This is one destination that is highly recommended all year round. The gardens are amazing with 60 acres of spectacular displays and with an annual event calendar there will always be something to attract you back time and time again.
Hunter Valley Gardens Easter Weekend will run until Monday (inclusive) until the fabulous school holiday activities will take over to delight the kids. Entry price is $22.50 Adults, $12.00 Children (4-15 years),3 and under is FREE and a family pass is $57.
For more infomation on the wonderful activities planned CLICK HERE.

Steamfest
1st  April 2010

There is one Newcastle event that has been on the calendar for four years now and this year is no exception.
My son has had a fascination with trains of all types since he was 3 years old. Each year we have travelled on one of the selected Steam Trains or Tin Hare Diesels for a one way or return journey from Newcastle to Maitland Station. This is the hub of where all the activities and exhibitions are.

This year celebrates 25 years of Steamfest history and will run over the weekend of the 17th and 18th of April. The first Steamfest was organised in 1985 by a dedicated group of volunteers whose vision was that Steamfest would become an annual fixture in the City's calendar.

In addition to the inaugural train ride there are also many exhibitions and activities located adjacent to Maitland Station allowing you to wander around until your return trip home. The 'Station Precinct' will feature over 150 market stalls, children's amusements, face painting and kid's entertainment with a few surprises still to be announced, a food court to cater for all tastes and an expanded live music and entainment program.

The 'Rally Ground' is where all the train action happens and is located adjacent to Maitland Railway Station. This is where you get to experience all things steam including traction engines, road steam equipment, mini train rides, vintage machinery and interperative tours. This year there is an entry charge of $2.00 per adult and children (U16 years) are free. This year you will also be lucky enough to see the Powerhouse Museum's Steam display including a model Stephenson's Rocket of 1829.

If you are looking for something a little more special, you can book one of the special train excursions including the Kids 'Pirates and Princesses Train' that includes a visit to the Newcastle Maritime Museum for a 'swash buckling' good time.

To book tickets or for more information on this fabulous event for kids, parents and train enthusiasts alike, CLICK HERE.

The Price Family Tip- As April is quite unpredictable with the weather, there could be rain on that weekend or leading up to it. The Rally Ground can get quite muddy so keep footwear in mind, especially if you are planning on giving the kids a miniature train ride where enclosed shoes must be worn. Pack a raincoat just in case.

This is the third CD Justine Clarke has released  and contains 15 new songs for everyone to enjoy...especially the parents.

Each time Justine releases a new CD, there is usually a rush to get a copy not only for the kids but also for the mums. Lila and May Snugglepods
30th March 2010

As I tuck my little ones into bed with a cooler change in the weather, I hope that during the night I will wake to cover them back up when they kick their sheets off. Now if they were just young enough to swaddle in these amazing Snuggle Pods by Lila and May I would be happy.
The Snuggle Pod is designed to keep baby feeling safe and snug without the complicated folding of normal wraps. The difference being the design of the Snuggle Pod is shaped perfectly to place your baby in the `pod' and then secure with the velcro fasteners.
